First Year Academics

Download the Summer Advising Day schedule

Now that you have selected your Fall 2009 courses, it's time to start thinking about making the transition from high school student to college student. The more prepared you are to hit the ground running when classes begin, the more successful you will be—beginning with reading and thinking about Song Yet Sung by James McBride, the first year book.

We also recommend "How is College Different From High School,", a good short introduction to college academic life by the staff of the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center at Southern Methodist University, and "The Fifteen Habits of Top College Students," by professors Lynn F. Jacobs and Jeremy S. Hyman of the education site of US News and World Report.

In your first year at Washington College, you will have a faculty advisor who has volunteered to advise a group of first year students and is well-prepared for advising. Faculty advisor assignments will be posted on WebAdvisor, under "My profile." You will meet as a group and individually with your faculty advisor during New Student Orientation in August.

If you have questions or concerns about college academics or about your Fall 2009 courses, you can contact your faculty advisor or Dean DiQuinzio, Associate Provost for Academic Services (410-778-7206, pdiquinzio2@washcoll.edu). Some faculty advisors may not be available during the summer—they're off doing research everywhere from Maine to Japan!—but most are available by email and Dean DiQuinzio is on campus and available throughout the summer.
